Description

The Atomos Ninja is a professional 5.2-inch HDR monitor-recorder that mounts on top of a camera. It serves two main purposes:

  1. Provides a much larger, brighter display than your camera’s built-in LCD.
  2. Records high-quality video directly to an SSD, often in professional codecs that are easier to edit than a camera’s internal recordings.

Key Features:

  • 5.2-inch Full HD touchscreen
  • 1,000-nit brightness, making it usable outdoors in daylight
  • Records up to 6K 30 fps RAW (with compatible cameras)
  • Records in Apple ProRes, ProRes RAW, Avid DNx, and H.265
  • HDMI input and output
  • Records to removable SSDs instead of SD cards
  • Powered by Sony NP-F batteries or USB-C power
  • Professional monitoring tools including:
    • Waveform monitor
    • Vectorscope
    • Focus peaking
    • False Color
    • Zebra exposure
    • Safe areas
    • LUT loading for previewing color grading

Why filmmakers use it

Many mirrorless and DSLR cameras produce excellent images but have limitations such as:

  • Recording compressed codecs
  • Limited recording times
  • Small LCD screens
  • Limited exposure tools

The Ninja overcomes many of these limitations by recording the camera’s clean HDMI output in editing-friendly formats. For many compatible cameras, it also unlocks ProRes RAW, which preserves more image data for color grading.

Monitoring Advantages:

Even if you never record externally, many creators buy the Ninja simply because it provides a much better monitoring experience.

Its larger screen makes it easier to:

  • Check critical focus
  • Judge exposure accurately
  • View HDR footage
  • Load LUTs to preview the finished look while shooting
  • Review clips immediately after recording

Storage: Instead of recording to SD cards, the Ninja records to:

  • Atomos Master Caddy SSDs
  • AtomX SSDmini drives
  • Some supported SSDs via adapters

Because SSDs are fast and inexpensive per gigabyte, they’re well suited to recording high-bitrate 4K and RAW video.

Typical Users: The Ninja is popular with:

  • Independent filmmakers
  • Documentary producers
  • Commercial videographers
  • Wedding videographers
  • YouTubers
  • Corporate video creators
